Be Prepared

Before an Eruption Occurs

  • Discover whether there are volcanic hazards likely to affect you.
  • If you live in an active volcanic zone, assume that you may have to deal with the effects of an eruption.
  • If you live in an area that could experience a lava flow during a volcanic eruption, know a quick route to safe ground.

Essential items to stock before an ashfall:

  • Dust masks and eye protection.
  • Enough drinking water and non-perishable food for at least 72 hours.
  • Plastic wrap (to keep ash out of electronics).
  • Lanterns or torches (flashlights) and extra batteries.
  • Extra stocks of medication for both family and pets.
  • First aid kit.
